Lead from the front

1.07

You should be the change that you want to see in the world.
Mahatma Gandhi

Leadership is different from management. There are plenty of managers, but relatively few leaders.

If you want to lead effectively, then it can only be done from the front. Not necessarily out in front charging with bayonet drawn in an old fashioned military way, but in a way that demonstrates you are involved, interested, concerned, and that you do take things personally. Leadership needs to be visible to those being lead. You have to be aware that as a leader you will be imitated. Whether deliberately or not, your actions and your lead will be mimicked. If you demonstrate energy – then you will see more energy from your team. However, if you skive off early on a Friday, then expect that as well.

People naturally imitate what they see every day.You need to show guidance. Therefore you need to have a plan, have an opinion, have passion, and be prepared to express and communicate them. Having thought through the issues and alternatives is essential, and being prepared to take a stand a pre-requisite.

The one thing that you cannot afford to be in any leadership role is wishy-washy. That in itself communicates a lack of conviction when you are not prepared to stand up and be counted on any issue.

Lack of conviction merely encourages mediocrity. If you want to be a leader – to make a success of your own business, then be prepared to lead from the front. Be prepared to form, express, and stand by your opinions. And, be prepared for the fact that there will always be people that will disagree with you, and there will be many times you have to defend yourself.

The SIMPLE reminder: be prepared to stand up for what you believe in – and lead from the front.
